GREENVILLE — Riverheads worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth inning to hold on for a 4-1 win over Luray in the Region 1B baseball championship June 4.
The Gladiators will now host a Class 1 state quarterfinal game, playing Lancaster, the Region 1A runner-up, Tuesday June 9.
"Everybody did a part," said Riverheads senior Brody Phillips. "We struggled through the middle of the game, but we managed to find a way in the end."
Riverheads (19-4) didn't waste much time getting the lead, scoring two runs on Kendal Edwards' single to right in the bottom of the first. The hit brought home Phillips and Ethan Mulcahy for a 2-0 lead.
Coach Rodney Painter said that helped ease the nerves of freshman starter Cason Croft, who was able to head into the second with a lead.
Luray got one run back in the third and, three innings later, threatened to tie the game or maybe even take the lead when the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a pair of walks, a sacrifice back to the pitcher and an intentional walk with just one out.
Riverheads junior relief pitcher Asher Falls, who entered in the sixth with no outs and two on, managed to work out of the jam. He got the first out on the sacrifice, the second on a strikeout and the third when the umpire called batter interference on Luray's Eli Wood to end the inning.
Riverheads then added two more runs in the bottom of that inning. Chase Donathan doubled home Phillips, then got to third on a passed ball and scored on Holden Fitzgerald's bunt. Luray went quietly in the seventh on three straight outs.
Croft got the win, pitching five innings of three-hit ball for Riverheads. Falls pitched the final two innings in relief. He didn't give up a hit or a run and struck out two, including the final out of the game.
Wood was the hard-luck loser for Luray, only giving up three hits and striking out nine in a complete game performance. Luray will play at Region 1A champion Rappahannock in the state quarterfinals Tuesday, June 9.
Riverheads has won seven of its last eight games as it heads into the state tournament.
