The Boston Red Sox entered the 2026 season with a talented but flawed team. The rotation was loaded and the lineup had potential, but the roster was imbalanced and light on power.

Since the season started, those flaws have been exposed and magnified. Injuries to two of the Red Sox's best hitters, Roman Anthony and Trevor Story, haven't helped, leaving the lineup even more shorthanded.

Boston's pitching and defense have been stellar, but the overall results haven't been pretty. After getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays this week, the Red Sox are last in the AL East with a 27-39 record -- the third-worst record in baseball.

In Alex Speier's article for The Boston Globe on June 10, rival executives blasted Boston's thin lineup and questionable roster construction.

"I can’t believe they are content going with so many [Triple-A] players — utility infielders — at the bottom of the lineup," said one evaluator.

"I’m still confused on the Red Sox roster construction and truthfully how they thought it would turn out any different than it has. The holes that were there at the start of the season are still there," said another.

To their point, the Red Sox's offense has been one of the worst in baseball this year, ranking near the bottom of the league in numerous categories. It lacks power and depth, as the bottom five hitters in Wednesday's lineup finished the game with a sub.-700 OPS.

Without Anthony and Story, there just aren't enough quality bats in Boston's lineup, and it shows. The Red Sox still have time to add some thump before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, but it may come too late to save the team from its historically bad start.
