The New Orleans Saints used pick No. 8 of the 2026 NFL Draft to give Tyler Shough another weapon, selecting Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. The 21-year-old wideout has the highest upside of any wide receiver in the draft, according to teams that spoke with ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Ohio State's Carnell Tate was viewed as a safer prospect, but after the Tennessee Titans selected Tate at pick No. 4, New Orleans stayed put and landed Tyson four picks later.

“They could have gone defense, but in my opinion, the move to help the quarterback (Tyler Shough) was the right one,” an AFC executive said of Tyson, via Fowler. “And his game really complements Chris Olave's well.”

For a young, emerging team like the Saints, the fit — along with potential upside — is the most important part of the pick. Tyson gives the Saints another young wide receiver with a skill set that can work alongside Olave rather than overlap with him, creating a conflict over targets and role. Fowler noted that the thought process behind the pick was simply about finding a talented prospect on intermediate and underneath routes. Olave can continue to create havoc in defenses vertically.

For an offense built around Shough, who is entering his second season, the Saints needed to make life easier for their potential star quarterback. Drafting Tyson gives New Orleans another potential long-term core piece and a receiver who could quickly carve out a real role in Kellen Moore's offense.

As for the injuries, Tyson has been limited in OTAs and mandatory minicamp, though he hasn't suffered any setbacks in his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered at Arizona State. That should give the Saints reason to remain patient while remaining optimistic about what he can add once fully healthy.
