Few defensive play callers have had to prepare for as many games against Drew Brees as Sean McDermott. While he's best known for his recent work with the Buffalo Bills, before he got that gig McDermott coached against Brees twice a year, every year, as the Carolina Panthers' defensive coordinator. And he told This Is Football's Kevin Clark that those NFC South rivalry games with Brees caused him to lose more sleep than preparing for any other quarterback. Not Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan or other passers he's had to coach against.

"Drew Brees," McDermott answered quickly. When asked why No. 9 was his pick, he answered, "He was a surgeon in terms of how accurate he was and how he understood NFL defenses and was able to look off and move defenders, and throw opposite the direction he was moving them."

Between his time as a defensive coordinator with the Eagles and Panthers, plus a nine-year run as Bills head coach, McDermott's teams lost more games (7) than they won (6) against New Orleans, with Brees and the Saints offense averaging 32 points per game. Brees threw 28 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions in that span. He rushed for a couple of touchdowns on the ground, too.

It helped that McDermott got to work with Luke Kuechly, the best linebacker of his generation, during those years in Carolina. And it's very fitting that Kuechly and Brees are going to be enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer as headlining members of the Class of 2026.
