Former Cardinals head coach Dave McGinnis dies at 74

Coach Mac coached the Cardinals from 2000-03, getting the full-time job after being in the interim coach.

Former NFL head coach Dave McGinnis died Monday, the Titans announced. “Coach Mac,” as he was affectionately known, was 74.

“My heart aches with the loss of Coach Mac, who was so much more than a coach and broadcaster. He was family,” Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. “Coach Mac gave so much of himself to this organization over the years, and his passion, loyalty, and love for the Titans never wavered. He cared deeply about the people around him, and that kindness and authenticity left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He held a very special place in our family, and his presence in our lives and within this franchise will never be forgotten. We will miss him dearly, and we will always be grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.”

McGinnis served as head coach of the Cardinals, beginning as interim coach in 2000 and keeping the job through the 2003 season. He went 17-40.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of Dave McGinnis’ passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved him,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said in a statement. “As Dave often said, he was a ‘ball coach’ through and through, and no one ever filled that role with more passion, enthusiasm, and charisma.

“Coach Mac truly loved the game and everything -- and everyone -- associated with it, especially his players. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.”

Such a kind and decent man. I pulled out the 1998 team video and love 2 of Mac’s quotes. The first was the game vs San Diego to clinch the playoff spot-“Roll call to the ball!” and the 2nd vs Dallas in the playoff game-“Finish, Finish, Finish”.

RIP Coach. My favorite memory of him is the 2001 game in Philly after Mar Tay Jenkins got a game winning TD on 4th and long with 7 or so seconds left. His reaction was awesome to see.

It was Jenkins. Dowdell played years earlier for us.

Such a nice guy who loved speaking with fans. My wife and I went to an event at Tempe Beach Park with player appearances while the team was trying to get a stadium vote passed. We met and spoke with Coach Mac, Pat Tillman, Aeneas Williams, Kwamie Lassiter, Corey Chavous, David Barrett, and a few other players. Got a printed team photo with all of those players and coach signing it.

Those were the days when you had access to the team and the players and felt like you were part of the organization.

Michael has taken all that away.

Yep, even when they were terrible, you still felt that connection with training camp in Flag, etc. Now they're both really bad and completely unlikable. Bidwill is the face of the team - that's a very bad thing.

I still love watching the clip of that post game locker room speech after they beat the Hawks in the first reg season game in their new stadium.

I thought the first game in the new stadium was against the niners? I was there for it. The black eyed peas played at half time. Or am I remembering wrong?

In another set of circumstances, I think he was at least a wild card HC. He is definitely gone too soon… he’s got Pat to hang out with now- I bet those guys have been talking nonstop since he checked in… quality human being.

You are correct. The new stadium opened in 2006 when Denny was the HC.

Somewhere I have a sneak preview ticket for Mel Gibson's film Ransom signed by Dowdell. We saw him in line at the original Cine Capri and that was all I could think of to have him sign. Then shortly after that I believe he was involved in a check-washing scandal.

Seahawks Stadium. Qwest Stadium at the time I believe.

Mac was kicking over trash cans and pumping up Thomas Jones who had a rare monster game screaming “that’s how we play football!!”
