WACO — The rings keep coming for Alpha Omega Academy as another team capped its season with a championship.

The AOA dance squad competed in the TAPPS Dance State Championships on Jan. 17, where they took home the top spot in Division II, Tier II. The Lady Lions squad took the event with an average team score of 93.67, one full point more than second-place Abilene Christian School.

AOA has competed in dance for the past five years, but never took home the crown at the state level.

“Championships aren’t won in a day. They are built in every practice, corrections they make and each choice they make to work harder,” AOA dance coach Maggie Collum said. “I think Alpha Omega has shown that hard work shows up when it matters most. They did a great job.”

Caidence Bird, Macy Collum, Sierra Gregory, Peyton Nichols, Addie Norris, Corrie Markham, Holly Hale and Ally Lockhart make up the Lady Lion dance team.

Heading into the state meet, Alpha Omega’s dance team saw eight weeks of practice for the event, and had to learn two dances for the competition. The squad learned two routines: a pom routine and a lyrical routine, for the event.

It was the only time the team competed this year.

“We pulled together, we practiced and we made it happen. The girls were really receptive to the choreography and put the extra work in at home,” Maggie said. “Getting there was the easy part, but once you are there, it gets hard. ”

Alpha Omega also saw individual state awards from the event.

Macy Collum took home multiple awards, landing the top spot in Leap Company; she also placed in Turn Company. Macy was first-team all-state and received a 1 with her solo jazz dance performance.

Gregory was also tabbed to the all-state first team and received a one in her solo competition.

Norris rounded out the all-state first-team for the dance team, while Nichols tabbed second-team all-state honors.
