Former Louisville basketball head coach Rick Pitino delivered the eulogy for Kenny Klein, the longtime sports information director at the University of Louisville. Klein died Thursday, June 25, at the age of 66.
Klein worked for the university from 1983 to 2022 and saw Pitino through his 16 seasons leading the Cardinals. The two were incredibly close, with Pitino even buying Klein a red convertible for his 50th birthday.
Klein's service was held at St. Raphael on Bardstown Road in Louisville on Monday, June 29.
"There was nobody better in life than Kenny," Pitino said. "He is the most special person I've met in my 73 years."
After Pitino left Louisville to take over at St. John's, Klein joined him as a special advisor to the program. The head coach said that they were "inseparable" during their time together in New York, sharing stories of them going out to eat around the city, talking about how Klein never missed a practice, and how he even once delayed a game because Klein didn't have a seat next to him, which wasn't going to fly.
"If anyone deserves celebration in life, and true honor to celebrate that life, that's Kenny Klein," Pitino said. "There's no better dad. There's no better husband. There's no better friend. There's no better SID to the media. There's no better meeting a person on the street than Kenny Klein, with that smile.
"Kenny, I'm never going to say goodbye to you. I'm going to look over at that empty seat to the left. And for everybody in this room, we won't say goodbye. We'll just keep him in our hearts forever."
