‘Twas the Night before the Draft and all across the country, people could stop staring at mock drafts and finally be free!
Yes, it’s that time of year. Not as exciting as Opening Day, but nonetheless still exciting.
The NFL Draft is upon us! We can finally stop wishing and hoping who will end up on the Giants, Bills, Jets, Patriots and Panthers (Yeah, the last one is on me).
No more talk of where Shadeur Sanders will go. Because come tonight, we’ll know.
Gone is the speculation and the endless supply of mock drafts or newest updates to Mel Kiper’s, Daniel Jeremiah’s or someone else’s mock.
Team’s will finally reveal their cards and Roger Goodell (to a chorus of boos I’m sure) will call names one-by-one.
It’s the time of the year for the NFL that really says “new look.” Sure, there has been free agency and the endless dribble of Aaron Rogers speculation, but this, this is what really brings a new crop of talent into the open arms of a career.
This is their time to shine. This is where they’re given a four-year contract, with an option for a fifth, to prove they belong.
To prove that they belong with the likes of Justin Jefferson, Saquan Barkley, Micah Parsons and the list goes on.
We’ll see the names of players we know, some we don’t and surprises. Think about it. You know there’s always a reach or a trade that surprises everyone.
Eli Manning drafted by the Chargers ... .and you know the rest of that story, Giants fans. Johnny Manziel falling. Rodgers falling. Michael Penix Jr. being picked by the Falcons last year.
Those are just a few off the top of my head. But, those stories are out there. They’re waiting to be told.
That’s not really what the draft is about though. It’s seeing who your team picks — if the mock drafts were right — and feeling that wave of emotion.
Will this guy get us over the top? Can we go from laughing stock to playoff contender? Case in point: Jayden Daniels to the Redskins last year.
Sure, new coach too. But, they had a revolving door at quarterback for years. Stabilize the most important position and wonders can happen.
It’s simply the mystery of it all. Will someone end up like Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf? Will there be a name picked tonight, or this weekend, that will transcend and become the next big name? What name will be the quickest to forget? Who goes from first round pick to bust, first?
There’s just this excitement to it, that honestly comes in any professional draft. The NFL it’s just different.
For nearly 50 years it was held in Radio City Music Hall, before moving it around annually to other cities and locations. This year it’s in the Frozen Tundra, Titletown, USA — Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
The smallest market in the NFL gets to host it on its grandest stage, outside of the Super Bowl of course. Playoffs are one thing but the biggest spectacle in the country being held in Green Bay, Wi.? In February?
No thank you.
Since the Super Bowl ended, eyes turned to the next crop of talent that was ready. From the NFL Combine to university pro days to private meetings, everything has culminated with today.
I’ll spare you my own mock draft, as I’m sure you’ve looked at least one.
They always say the draft starts when a big question — or shocker — happens. Could it be at #3 with the Giants? #5 with Jacksonville? #6 with the Raiders? It’s out there and it’s what will get people talking.
And I’m sure a lot of it will be on where Sanders ends up.
With that being said, you know my eyes will be watching it Thursday and have it as background noise the rest of the weekend. Thursday is always the most enjoyable.
Surely, it’ll be a good night.
