Former Syracuse quarterback Rex Culpepper has died at 28, his fiancée announced on Instagram Monday.
Culpepper died in a dirt bike accident, according to several reports, years after surviving cancer. The Florida native was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2018, underwent chemotherapy while practicing with Syracuse and still managed to play in the spring game.
On the final drive, Culpepper led his offense to a touchdown, exemplifying his resilience.
"No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only 6 short years after meeting," Savanna Morgan wrote. "Rex didnt always believe in soulmates but towards the end he told me that he didnt realize what having a soulmate felt like until we felt like extensions of each other. And one thing about us is that we lived every single day like it was our last. ...
"You made six years feel like a lifetime Rexy."
Culpepper died less than a month after proposing to Morgan.
Over four seasons at Syracuse, including a brief position switch to tight end then back to quarterback, Culpepper appeared in 30 games. He completed 52.3% of his passes for 1,546 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Culpepper came from a family with a strong football tradition. His father, Brad Culpepper, played defensive tackle for Florida and three NFL teams. Judge Culpepper, Rex's brother, played D-line at Penn State and Toledo before a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It's a devastating loss for Syracuse fans and anyone who knew Culpepper.
