The Rex Baseball team's Sunday afternoon home game against the Normal CornBelters got rained out in the bottom of the first inning and has been rescheduled for July 27.
The Rex-Cornbelters duel will resume where it left off at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27 at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, followed by another regular scheduled nine-inning game, making it a doubleheader, according to Adrian Madrid, Rex Baseball assistant general manager.
The Rex lead the Prospect League Central Division with an 8-2 record going into Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. game at Springfield, Ill.
The Terre Haute club got its eighth victory on Saturday by a 9-5 score at the CornBelters' Corn Crib Stadium in Normal.
An eight-run sixth inning explosion by the Rex broke a 1-1 tie and secured the win.
A RBI single by Rex third baseman Delvis Claudio scored leadoff man Jayden Lepper in the first inning to open the scoring. That 1-0 lead held until the CornBelters tied it in the bottom of the fifth with an error-induced unearned run.
In an erratic sixth inning, Terre Haute put the game out of reach. Jeremi Lara and Ben Jones both scored on wild pitches to give the Rex a 3-1 lead. Lepper added a RBI single, followed by Nomar Garcia's two-run single. Lepper wound up scoring on one of the CornBelter pitchers' three balks, before Wally Diaz's single to center field scored two more runs for a 9-1 Terre Haute lead.
Normal mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs. But Rex reliever Joan Contreras finally shut down the uprising, getting two strikeouts in the final frame.
Diaz and Lepper both went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Garcia topped the Rex with a 3-for-4 effort, with two RBI and a run scored.
