New reports about the New York Mets and New York Yankees trade deadline plans open the door to a rare trade between the two teams, and it could include former top prospect Jasson Dominguez heading to Queens.
The Yankees and Mets enter the second half of the 2026 MLB season in very different places. The team from the Bronx has one of the best records in the American League (54-43), and if they can get top star Aaron Judge back from the injured list eventually, they are a serious contender to reach the World Series. The club from Queens is in the opposite position, as they own the fourth-worst record (41-57) in MLB entering the weekend.
The Mets are obvious sellers before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, and the Yankees seem like buyers. It is why they have been linked to each other in ongoing trade speculation. While there has been speculation about the Yanks inquiring about a trade for Francisco Lindor, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman shut down that idea on Friday. However, he did note the Mets have other players that will interest the Bronx Bombers.
The Yankees want bullpen help and badly need an upgrade at catcher. The Mets have the impact players to address those needs. But what would be a worthwhile return for the Amazin’s if they were willing to trade players like Alvarez, Holmes, or Weaver across town?
The Yankees’ farm system isn’t very deep, and they are not going to part with elite prospects like George Lombard Jr. or Spencer Jones. However, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reported Saturday that “there is a growing belief that contenders might have to trade from major league depth” before the deadline. That should mean Dominguez is available, and the Mets should consider acquiring him.

Just a few years ago, the outfielder was the brightest young talent in the Yankees farm system, and the player nicknamed “The Martian” was seen as untouchable. However, a mix of bad luck injuries and inconsistent plays has left some doubting if he ever meets his potential. Nevertheless, there are still experts around the game who feel that if Dominguez can get complete investment from a team, he can easily be a player who hits 25 home runs and knocks in over 80 runs consistently.
If the Yankees believe Judge will return this season, as well as Giancarlo Stanton, Dominguez will head back to the bench and collect dust. It seems like a trade including the 23-year-old is as likely as ever. Even ESPN stats guru Paul Hembo suggested he would be an obvious addition to a deal with the San Diego Padres to get one or two of their talented relievers on a new edition of the BBTN podcast.
The Mets seem set in the outfield in the years ahead with Juan Soto, AJ Ewing, and Carson Benge. However, it is possible that one of the two youngsters doesn’t pan out. Dominguez would offer an alternative in the outfield. However, he could be a strong option at DH immediately after a potential trade. He could also be a player to look at in a position change in 2027 and see if first base could be in his future.
Making him even more appealing to the Mets are the financial benefits that come with his upside. Dominguez is still under arbitration control for two more seasons.
