Reported around 6:30 on January 2, Georgia Tech Football defensive coordinator Blake Gideon is headed back to the University of Texas, where Tech hired him from before the 2025 season. Gideon rejoins the Longhorns on defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s staff.

Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Blake Gideon is returning to Texas as an assistant for Steve Sarkisian and Will Muschamp, @InsideTexas' @EricNahlin has learned.

Gideon, who played 52 games for UT, was on Sarkisian's original staff from 2021-24

Under Gideon, Tech’s defense was problematic at best, ranking 99th in FBS by adjusted EPA/play and 98th in yards/play allowed. Things became worrisome defensively when Tech allowed 48 points to NC State, ending Tech’s undefeated run at 8-0, and then followed it up by allowing 34 points to 1-win Boston College, then going down 28-0 to Pitt in just over a quarter of play.

On the plus side, Tech’s defense did hold georgia to only 16 points.

With Gideon’s departure, the Jackets currently have vancancies in both offensive and defensive coordinator. Former OC Buster Faulkner left to become Florida’s OC under John Sumrall before the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Gideon was the third full-time defensive coordinator to coach under head coach Brent Key, who now seeks his fourth defensive coordinator since taking over in 2022.
