According to a report by NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Vancouver Canucks are expected to bring 2026 AHL Coach of the Year and Providence Bruins head coach Ryan Mougenel in to join head coach Manny Malhotra's staff.

Mougenel has been Providence’s head coach for the past five seasons, first joining the organization as an assistant in 2018–19. Prior to his time with the AHL Bruins, Mougenel also served as an assistant coach with the San Jose Barracuda (2014–15 as the Worcester Sharks to 2017–18) and Hershey Bears (2013–14). He also has experience as a General Manager, having occupied both the GM and head coach role for the then-Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL.

As the AHL Bruins’ head coach, Mougenel and Providence made the post-season in each of the past five seasons. That said, throughout every playoff run with Mougenel at the helm, Providence was unable to make it past the first round. In the last four years, the AHL Bruins collected 40 or more wins in each regular season.

The 2025–26 season saw Providence dominate in nearly every category. With a final regular-season record of 54–16–2–0, good for a league-leading 110 points in the AHL’s standings.

Mougenel is the first name that has been connected to the Canucks' new coaching staff, though Vancouver General Manager Ryan Johnson noted on Thursday that there would likely be more to share regarding this come early next week.
