Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. was the best player for the Nets last season as he had an All-Star caliber year while seemingly carrying the offense at times. Porter is under contract for next season so Brooklyn should have him in the fold to assume a similar role, but that won't stop other teams from monitoring whether he is staying with the Nets or not.
"The 6-foot-10 forward is eligible for an extension this summer and is also being monitored as a potential trade candidate by teams around the league," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported on Porter. Porter is eligible to sign a four-year, $234 million extension this offseason and while that doesn’t necessarily mean that he is getting that from the Nets, there will inevitably be conversations between both parties about what contract is appropriate.
"With Porter Jr. entering the prime of his career and the Nets in the midst of a rebuild, executives across the league have always questioned if their timelines would fit beyond his current contract," Scotto continued on Porter. "If the Nets don’t agree to an extension with Porter Jr., teams around the league are expected to poke around on his trade availability."
Porter, 27, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line in 52 games played. Due to how well Porter was playing prior to the February All-Star break, opposing teams were rumored to be considering trading for him to aid in their goal of making a playoff run.
Porter ultimately remained in Brooklyn past the trade deadline and after missing the All-Star Game entirely, it became clear that his focus was inconsistent at best, which he later admitted in his exit interview. Time will tell whether the Nets will sign Porter to an extension, but if that does not come to pass, it seems that other teams are still interested in his services while he's in his prime.
