Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. will be one of the main storylines for the Nets this offseason as he is eligible to sign a contract extension with the franchise. Brooklyn has made various moves to improve the roster for next season and beyond, but the task will be deciding what kind of deal Porter and the Nets can come to and his agent shed some light on the negotiations.
"[Nets GM] Sean [Marks] and I have talked. Michael loves it in Brooklyn. Jordi has been great for him. I think Jordi has been so innovative in how he's used Michael. I think it's a great fit," Porter's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said of the situation during an appearance SiriusXM NBA Radio with Justin Termine and former NBA player Eddie Johnson. Time will tell what kind of deal Porter is able to get from the Nets.
"But, that's something that Sean and I have to sit down and talk about. The Nets have to ultimately chart out their course for the way they want to go forward. Obviously, we got to do the same thing for Michael," Bartelstein continued. "If we can make it work where there's a long-term fit, that would be awesome. But, that's something we're going to be talking about here in the days ahead."
Porter, 28, is coming the best season of his eight-year career as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter is eligible to sign a contract extension for four years and $234 million, but it seems like Brooklyn would not be giving him the max in either category, meaning that there might have to be give and take from both sides.
With Bartelstein explaining what it would take for both sides to come to terms on an extension, it seems that Porter wants to stay in Brooklyn more than he wants to play for another team. However, the terms of the contract will determine if Porter will be with the Nets for the foreseeable future. As of now, his agent sounds like there is still mutual interest from both sides to get a deal done.
