The Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said that change is the only constant in life. To a certain extent, that has been very true for Luka Doncic over the last 18 months or so.
First came the stunning trade in early February 2025 that sent him from the Dallas Mavericks, the team he likely expected to stay with for many years, to the Los Angeles Lakers. Then just a few months later, Mark Walter, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, negotiated to purchase the Lakers from the Buss family, which had owned the team since 1979.
This week, Walter agreed to sell the majority stake in the Lakers he had purchased to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, which was a very stunning development across the NBA. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Luka Doncic expressed that he's looking forward to meeting the franchise's incoming owners.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Doncic wasn't consulted about the sale, but he does plan to meet virtually with Kushner and Iger soon.
Doncic will be hosting that minicamp for his Lakers teammates later this month from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24. He is now the unquestioned leader of the team after LeBron James' departure earlier this summer, and this minicamp is being seen as his first real gesture to assert his leadership as the franchise moves forward into its next era.

"Doncic was not consulted about the sale, sources told ESPN, but he plans to have a videoconference call with Iger and Kushner next week from Slovenia as he prepares to host his teammates for a minicamp in his home country," McMenamin wrote.
