Jürgen Klopp held talks with German football bosses about becoming the new men's team coach in an airport hotel in New York on Friday, the Bild newspaper reported on Saturday.
The former Liverpool boss met German Football Federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf and vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke near John F Kennedy Airport, the report said.
Photographs showed Klopp and his agent Marc Kosicke at a building entrance as well as Neuendorf and Watzke with their luggage. The meeting is said to have lasted more than four hours.
Klopp is working as a pundit for MagentaTV during the World Cup and has been in the US for several weeks. The DFB officials flew in from Frankfurt on Friday.
Klopp is the DFB's preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after the World Cup last-32 exit.
After the 59-year-old signalled his willingness to take on the role, anything other than an agreement would be a major surprise.
Klopp is set to receive a contract to the 2030 World Cup and a salary only slightly higher than that of Nagelsmann, media have speculated.
He is contracted to Red Bull as their global head of soccer until 2029 but reports say there is a break clause if the DFB came calling.
Talks with Red Bull over terminating Klopp's contract are due to follow next week.
If reports are correct, Klopp would give up his job at the drinks group sports franchise but remain a brand representative.
Germany's first internationals after a third straight World Cup debacle are scheduled for September and October. They begins their Nations League campaign with matches in the Netherlands, against Serbia and twice against Greece.
