A cornerstone of the Detroit Pistons’ rebuild could be heading toward an uncertain future.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, extension talks between the Pistons and All-NBA center Jalen Duren have stalled, leaving the 22-year-old reportedly prepared to explore sign-and-trade opportunities when they become available Tuesday.
While the two sides still have time to reach an agreement, the report indicates there remains a significant gap in negotiations.
Duren is coming off a breakout 2025-26 campaign in which he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting an impressive 65 percent from the field. His dominant regular season earned him Third Team All NBA honors, making him eligible for a five year, $287.1 million maximum extension.
According to The Athletic, Detroit’s initial offer fell well short of Duren’s expectations.
Rather than signing an offer sheet that the Pistons would likely match, Duren is reportedly expected to explore sign and trade scenarios if negotiations continue to stall.
While Duren established himself as one of the NBA’s rising stars during the regular season, his production dipped significantly in the playoffs.
In 14 postseason games, he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the field as Detroit’s season ended in the second round against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
That contrast between his regular season dominance and playoff struggles appears to be playing a role in the negotiations.
The report also notes that Detroit remains aggressive in pursuing another impact player this offseason.
Before Austin Reaves re signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Pistons reportedly had serious interest in the veteran guard. Detroit has also been linked to stars such as Jaylen Brown and Kawhi Leonard, along with Tyler Herro before his reported move to Milwaukee.
Earlier this week, the Pistons created additional financial flexibility by trading Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies for three future second round draft picks, a move many viewed as positioning the franchise for another significant addition.
President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon has consistently stressed the importance of balancing immediate success with long term financial flexibility.
Jalen Duren remains one of Detroit’s most important young players, and there is still plenty of time for both sides to reach common ground.
However, if negotiations remain at a standstill, the possibility of a sign and trade will become one of the biggest storylines of the Pistons’ offseason. For a team looking to build a championship contender around Cade Cunningham, the outcome of these talks could shape the franchise’s future for years to come.
