Former Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has likely played his last down in the NFL.
According to KPRC2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, the Pro Bowl running back who missed the entire 2025 season has already told former teammates in Cincinnati that his career is likely over following a severe foot injury. Mixon was released earlier this offseason after Houston's inability to see him play last fall.
"I had a source close to Joe tell me recently there's some hope [of a return]," Wilson said around the 40:20 mark of the livestream. "Some hope, but I think it's probably over."According to Wilson, Mixon, who helped Houston's offense return to the playoffs in 2024, has dealt with issues with blood flow to his injured foot, on which he recently underwent another surgery. This marks the second major surgery on the foot in the last 14 months, which could lead to a prolonged delay for any return.
Still, with the recovery time and his age, it seems bleak that he'll ever suit up again the NFL.
"He has told some friends, players for the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played before, that he is not going to play football anymore," Wilson said around the 1:02 mark.
A former second-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2017, Mixon totaled four 1,000-yard seasons with Cincinnati, including a dominant 1,200-yard campaign in 2012 that helped the Bengals reach the Super Bowl. After a promising 2023 campagin, the Bengals traded Mixon to the Texans in exchange for a seventh-round pick.
After arriving in Houston, the Texans inked him to a three-year, $27 million extension, keeping him under contract through 2026. In his lone season, Mixon kept up the Pro Bowl form, rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns on 245 carries and earned a second Pro Bowl nod.
Mixon, who, if finished, will have totaled 7,428 rushing yards and 60 rushing touchdowns, became the first Texans running back since 2019 to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. Mixon had requested his release from the Texans before it was granted earlier this offseason once the team added Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery.
The Texans return for the start of training camp on Tuesday.
