Day 2 of the 2026 NHL Draft is underway, and the draft coverage started with a bang. On the broadcast, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that, among many teams, he expects two teams to be very aggressive in their pursuit of the 2025-26 Norris Trophy winner, Zach Werenski, and one of them is the Philadelphia Flyers.
“There was a lot of noise around Werenski over the last few weeks,” Friedman said. “There is word that he has informed the Blue Jackets that he will not extend after the next two years of his deal, and it’s kind of in Columbus’ hands on how they want to handle it. They have started opening talks; they are at least discussing it with other teams. I don’t know how I would handicap the likelihood, but there is interest. Dallas and Philadelphia are among the teams expected to be very aggressive.”
The Flyers have been well noted to be looking to upgrade on defense. A true No. 1 defenseman as well as a No. 1 center have been needed for a while now. Werenski would fill that No. 1 defender spot.
Werenski, the 6’2″ left-shot defenseman, would be absolutely everything the Flyers are looking for. A true defender, but also has point-producing offensive impact. In 75 games in his Norris-winning season, Werenski had 22 goals and 81 total points, including 21 power-play points and 4 power-play goals.
Werenski is a true, elite, two-way defenseman. It will be a hefty price for Werenski, probably a highly uncomfortable one at that. But the Flyers have the assets to get it done. Without knowing what direction the Blue Jackets will go, it’s hard to fully predict the package.
