ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the knee injury that Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant sustained today at practice would keep him sidelined for about eight to ten weeks with no surgery required. Schefter reports that Bryant hyperextended his knee, has a bone bruise, and a small fracture. All things considered, things could have been much worse, so I’m chalking this one up as good news for the Bears’ defense.
With Bryant out and Elijah Hicks on the PUP list, it’ll likely be Cam Lewis getting first-string reps alongside rookie safety Dillon Thieneman. Lewis signed a free agent deal this March with Chicago after playing with the Buffalo Bills since 2019. He’s appeared in 76 games with 14 starts in his career, with reps at both safety and nickel.
Other safeties on the roster are Gervarrius Owens, Anthony Johnson Jr., and Skyler Thomas.
Owens spent last year on the Bears’ practice squad, and he has 5 games under his belt from 2023 to 2024 with just 1 snap on defense.
Johnson missed the 2025 season due to injury, but in 2023 and 2024, he played in 21 total games with 4 starts (all in’ 23).
Thomas is a 2026 UDFA from Oregon State.
