Reese Peña went with the path she knew — which was about 2 miles.
A couple of weeks ago, the Lubbock High senior was deciding between the 800 and 3,200 meters to pair with her usual 1,600 event. Peña was coming off three golds at the district meet, but she wanted to pare down her load in order to increase her odds of reaching Austin.
Peña chose the 3,200 because of her familiarity. The result was a ticket to a familiar spot.
The LHS standout won the 3,200 in a personal-best 10 minutes, 52.89 seconds at Friday's Region I-5A track and field meet at Lowrey Field. She'll return to the UIL state meet after placing fifth in the event the past two years.
"I had more confidence in the 3,200," Peña said of her decision to forgo the 800 after district. "I've done it multiple times. The 800 I only did three times, so I wasn't very experienced. I had some really good breakthrough races, but I didn't feel the confidence in it to really go through and follow through with it."
Peña said she has her 3,200 strategy down, but her new event provided crucial information, too. Peña knew how much she had in the tank over the last two laps — and she kicked to win by 15.63 seconds Friday.
"I think a lot of it was because I've done the 800 the past few times," Peña said. "So I knew I had that kick in me. I knew what I was capable of, and so I just went for it."
Peña will go for another state berth Saturday in the 1,600, which she also qualified for the past two seasons.
It's not every meet Sione Vaea gets nervous. But not every meet has a trip to state on the line.
The Lubbock-Cooper junior said it was a nerve-racking night prior to the Region I-5A meet. Vaea entered with the second-best seeding mark, but Friday showed previous results matter not.
Vaea delivered, and he'll soon make his state debut.
The Cooper thrower placed second in the shot put to advance to Austin. His heave of 54 feet, 1¼ inches was 3 inches behind regional champion Aaron Phares of Amarillo Tascosa.
"I was really nervous last night," Vaea said. "Waking up this morning got my blood flowing, ready to just let the shot put fly."
Vaea said the nerves dissipated once he went through warmups. He also had some tunes in his ears during his preparation and between attempts.
"I just listen to a little bit of R&B," Vaea said. "Just calming me down, calming all my nerves."
It was a personal-best for Vaea, who said his goal is to throw 65 feet. He admitted he's a long way from that, but he plans to train toward that for state in a couple weeks.
Friday's event included a foul out by one of the state's best. Mansfield Summit senior Travis Buhake surpassed 60 feet in six meets this season, with his 61-10 on March 13 the third-ranked throw in 5A, according to online results.
Buhake's three attempts in prelims flirted with the 60-foot line, but each flew to the right of the sector.
"I know he's a really good shot-put thrower," Vaea said. "Really had high hopes for him, but things happen. I felt bad, but we just had to move on."
Brentley Preston and Niomi Wines are going back to Austin.
The Cooper seniors, who each medaled at state last year, advanced by going 1-2 in the high jump. It was eerily similar to last season, with Preston taking the Region I-5A title and Wines placing second with the same clearance height. Each jumped 5-7 Friday.
Wines went on to win the 5A championship, and Preston nabbed bronze.
Lane Miller will join them in the 4A ranks. The Lubbock-Cooper Liberty freshman finished second in the Region I-4A pole vault at 15-0. That matched the clearance by Decatur's Parker Williams, the regional champ.
