With the trade deadline just a week away, let’s look at some of the biggest storylines and rumors surrounding the Cincinnati Reds and their potential moves.
Steer is expected to miss a significant amount of time with his wrist injury, essentially eliminating any chance that he could be dealt at the deadline. He was one of the Reds’ most valuable trade chips because of his multiple years of control and ability to play nearly anywhere on the field.
Right-handed hitters are sparse on the trade market, and it was more than likely that the Reds would have traded Steer because the asking price would have rightly been high. There are reports that Steer will not need surgery and that Cincinnati is hoping his wrist will heal on its own.
After Shea Langeliers’ knee injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, Tyler Stephenson’s trade value continues to skyrocket. He is the second-most valuable catcher on the market behind Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, who has been a big power bat this season.
With such a large market for backstop help, Stephenson should be able to command a pretty steep price, although he will be a rental with his contract expiring after this season.
ESPN's Jeff Passan speculated that the Dodgers may be willing to move on from Teoscar Hernández, and he could be a controllable fit for the Reds because he has a club option for 2028.
The former Blue Jay is paid an average of $22 million a year by the Dodgers and has hit 20-plus home runs in each of the past five seasons. Los Angeles knows right-handed hitters are at a premium, and it has a treasure chest of outfielders in its farm system.
Hernández is having a down season with just eight home runs, but he is hitting a respectable .251. Hernández has 37 RBIs. The Dodgers have reportedly committed to Dalton Rushing at catcher amid Will Smith’s injury, but if that changes, Tyler Stephenson could possibly be a trade chip for Hernández.
Jesse Rogers matched the Reds and White Sox in a Brady Singer trade on July 23. Singer had a 3.08 ERA in June and has a 2.77 ERA in July, representing a sharp turnaround after he struggled through much of the first half of the season.
If there is one player on the Reds' roster I am most confident will be dealt, I think it is Singer. There is a case in which Cincinnati holds on to Tyler Stephenson in hopes of signing him next season.
