The weekend series between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals will now start with a much different feel than expected. Friday night’s game at Great American Ball Park was officially postponed because of rain and will instead be made up Saturday as the first game of a split doubleheader. The makeup game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET on May 23, with the originally scheduled Saturday game still set for later in the evening.

Reds outlook​

The postponement comes at an interesting time for both National League Central clubs. Cincinnati entered the series trying to build momentum after taking two of three from the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this week. Rookie infielder Sal Stewart helped spark the turnaround with a breakout series, including a four-hit performance in Wednesday’s 9-4 win. Reds manager Terry Francona praised Stewart’s confidence after the game, pointing to the young hitter’s ability to quickly move past slumps.

Cardinals outlook​

Meanwhile, St. Louis arrives in Cincinnati looking to halt a brief skid after dropping back-to-back games to the Pittsburgh Pirates. One bright spot for the Cardinals has been catcher Ivan Herrera, who has homered in two of his last three games. The delay also changes the pitching outlook for both teams. Friday’s expected matchup featured Chris Paddack against Kyle Leahy, though both clubs could now adjust their rotations ahead of the doubleheader.

Tonight’s Reds-Cardinals game has been postponed and will be made up as the first game of a split doubleheader tomorrow, May 23, at 1:10 PM.

At 28-21, the Cardinals entered the day sitting third in the NL Central, while the Reds were close behind at 26-24. What looked like a routine May series has suddenly turned into a long Saturday that could swing momentum for either team before the division race heats up just as summer begins.
