MIAMI – Injured catcher Jose Trevino left the Cincinnati Reds to return home for a scheduled MRI on his ailing back Sept. 9 as the team tries to determine the severity of an injury Trevino has tried to manage since spring training.
“He said it felt like he calmed it down, and it’s just been getting to the point where he catches and he goes right back to where he was. It locks up on him,” manager Terry Francona said. “He’ll get an MRI and maybe they inject (an anti-inflammatory) – whatever – and hopefully he just misses (the minimum).”
Trevino was put on the 10-day injured list just ahead of a scheduled start in the finale of this week’s four-game series against the Marlins in Miami and backdated the maximum-allowed three days. That makes his first eligible day to return April15 at home against the San Francisco Giants.

The versatile P.J. Higgins was called up from Triple-A Louisville to take Trevino’s place on the 26-man roster, and in the starting lineup for the Miami series finale.
Trevino last played April 4 in Texas, a game in which he made the defensive play of the season so far – springing from behind the plate when Josh Jung topped a slow roller between the mound and third-base line, then pouncing on the ball about 10-12 feet from the plate and spinning to throw out Jung at first by a half-step.
“It was even more impressive, given the fact that he wasn’t feeling very good,” Francona said. “I don’t think anything he did felt good. He’s a tough kid.”
The move to bring Higgins back from Louisville cost the Reds once-promising slugger Christian Encarnacion-Strand.
“Those are the things that happen when you have injuries,” Francona said. “I don’t think anybody was thrilled about it.”
Encarnacion-Strand was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Higgins, which means likely losing him to a waiver claim in the next week. Rival teams already were doing due diligence and background work on CES by late Wednesday.
“My guess is there’ll be a number of teams that want to acquire him, just because of his power potential,” Francona said.
Encarnacion-Strand, 26, was acquired from the Twins in the 2022 Tyler Mahle trade that also netted the Reds Spencer Steer.
CES was part of the wave of touted prospects who debuted for the Reds in 2023, hitting .270 with 13 home runs in 63 games that season before his big-league career was derailed by injuries and strikeout-prone underachievement.
Higgins is in his third season with the Reds organization but didn’t play in the big leagues the last two seasons.
“He kind of grew on everybody this spring, just kind of the way he went about his business,” Francona said. “He has a real good feel for behind the plate, and he can move around. And you don’t know how long it’s going to be. You don’t know what happens.”
Higgins, who can also play the corner infield spots, has 83 games of big-league experience, in 2021 and ’22 with the Chicago Cubs. He hit .210 with six home runs.
