NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Illinois State Redbird football team feels like it has played an NFL schedule.

The team opened fall camp on July 31 and it is still playing. The Redbirds will play their 17th game of the season when they meet Montana State in the FCS National Championship game on Monday.

“I look at it like it’s a taste of the NFL. Week 17, it’s great,” said ISU senior running back Victor Dawson. “It’s always a blessing to continue playing football. Playing at this time of year — so great.”

The Redbirds will be playing in just their second game ever in the month of January. ISU lost to North Dakota State in the FCS title game following the 2014 season, in January of 2015.

ISU started the playoffs the weekend after Thanksgiving and has win four straight road playoff games to extend the season into the new year.

“Playing after Christmas, after New Year’s, even. It’s something different obviously,” said senior wide receiver Daniel Sobkowicz. “It’s going to be fun, we are all excited. We get to spend a couple more weeks with each other. It’s a lot of fun.”
