The post Red Wings Russian Camp Invites Got Taste of Detroit appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.
Vinogradov, Nikita Tyurin and other prospects take part in a rush drill
Red Wings prospect development camp just wrapped up, and the young players invited by the team’s top brass are on their way home after a week under the watchful eye of scouts and media. For some of those players, it was their first time in North America and the first time that the Red Wings saw them in-person, as was the case for three of their Russian invites this year.
Detroit, a team known for rostering some of the best Russian hockey players in NHL history, hosted three young KHL players over the past week, including free agent invites Yegor Vinagradov and Yaroslav Busygin, alongside 2025 sixth round pick Nikita Tyurin
“It was good to finally see him [Tyurin.] You know, three of them together are like thick as thieves these guys. They had a great time. Got to watch and do some baseball, they got to go shopping… I hope they enjoyed it,” Director of prospect development Dan Cleary said.
It wasn’t all fun and games, though. The three had to go through the last week waking up to and training with a team and staff that didn’t always speak their language. During one drill on the last day Tyurin had to be given instructions from both his coach and his fellow Russians with a better grasp of English multiple times before completing it.
It wasn’t like he did anything wrong. In fact, it was more that he seemed a little overeager, crossing over to one of the other groups as they were completing the drill so he could get his next rep in. A quick redirect from a teammate and another explanation from a coach had him do the next rep (with the right group) perfectly.
“Fish was a great help in that, and having our Russian scout here to translate because I didn’t understand them much and they certainly didn’t understand me,” Cleary joked.
Of course for Red Wings fans, they might have been more interested in what center Vinagradov, who had 54 points in 67 KHL games last year for Torpedo Novgorod has to offer in the short term. Unfortunately the 23 year old is still under contract with his Russian club, but establishing a relationship with him was important for the team.
“Fish threw those two guys at me [Busygin and Vinagradov], and you know, Vinagradov had a really good season in the KHL. It’s his first time over here. Certainly it’s great to see these guys,” Cleary said, “All these kids are sponges, you know, which is great. These kids are much more prepared, and better than I was at that age.”
Whether they’ll be able to have the same sort of successful NHL career as Cleary is yet to be seen, however.
