Brady Cleveland
Detroit Red Wings prospect Brady Cleveland certainly isn’t the first hockey player to play for several different teams. Being prepared to move is a big part of the life of an elite athlete.
Usually, though, the amount of moving that Cleveland has done in the past few years isn’t part of a player’s life until they sign a pro contract.
Cleveland completed his junior year as an NCAA player this past winter. And he did so while suiting up for his third different school.
Detroit’s 47th overall selection in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound defenseman first enrolled at Wisconsin after leaving USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in 2023.
Following his freshman season with the Badgers, Cleveland entered the transfer portal and made the move to Colorado College. Then, after one season with the Tigers, Cleveland was on the move again. This time, he was transferring to Minnesota-Duluth, joining fellow Red Wings draftee Max Plante on the Bulldogs roster.
The Red Wings are definitely monitoring Cleveland’s progress as a hockey player. He treasures any time he gets to spend with the team’s development staff, like Dan Cleary and Niklas Kronwall.
“There’s a lot of lessons to be learned from those guys,” Cleveland told the Duluth News Tribune. “During the summer, when I get to be there and be around those guys, it’s something really cool and really special to be a part of.”
Where he decides he wants to play that hockey is something they leave entirely up to him.
“At the end of the day, it’s my career,” Cleveland said. “They don’t want to really guide you. They can help, but they don’t want to guide you a certain way and lead you in a wrong direction.”
Ultimately, it’s his call where he goes.
“They don’t want to be the reason why – if they told me to go to this school and it didn’t work out – they don’t want to be held accountable for that,” Cleveland said.
Wherever he’s gone, the Red Wings are always there for him.
“They’ve been really supportive, though,” Cleveland said. “I talk to their development guy, Dan Cleary. I talk to him very often.
“He’s always just been like, ‘You need to do what you need to do.’”

5️recruit Brady Cleveland has transferred from Wisconsin to Colorado College. A true defensive defenseman who loves to throw the body at 6'5 209 lbs. One of the top blue liners in takeaways and pass exits in college hockey.
