Jesse Kiiskinen
On the surface, Jesse Kiiskinen projects to be the type of player that the Detroit Red Wings sorely need.
He goes to the net. He works the corners. Board meetings are his forte.
“Yeah, I enjoy those battles,” Kiiskinen said. “I don’t know, I like the feeling all the time for myself.
“That’s why I like the small rink also, because there’s all the time skating and battling.”
Still, as much as he projects to be helpful, it’s wise to keep in mind that, for the time being, Kiiskinen remains a project. He’s far from a finished product. And that’s why he’ll more than likely be back playing in Finland’s SM-liiga for HPK again during the 2026-27 season.
The Wings gave the Finnish right-winger a look with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins late in the AHL season. It was a short preview. Not long after he arrived in North America, the Red Wings announced that Kiiskinen was being reassigned to HPK.
The organization didn’t even think he was ready to be a spare part as the Griffins entered the Calder Cup playoffs.
“Hockey is, like, different here,” Kiiskinen admitted. “Like, a lot of new things, but I think I’m really getting used to it. Those situations are not a big deal for me.”
Loaded with defense prospects, the Red Wings dealt defenseman Andrew Gibson, a second-round pick, to the Nashville Predators for Kiiskinen, who was a third-round pick of the Preds.
I think it’s part of the business,” Kiiskinen said of being traded. “Sometimes some things happen, and then you have to open the new book, and that’s it.
“So it’s a new book which is open now.”
In a three-game stint with the Griffins, Kiiskinen counted a goal and an assist. He’s tallied 31 goals over 100 games in Finland the past two seasons.
“I score,” Kiiskinen said. “I’m a scorer and still like to battle and be a little bit frustrating for the other team’s players.”
Only 20 and entering the second year of a three-year entry-level deal with the Red Wings, Kiiskinen may find that he’s facing an uphill battle to stick with the Griffins this fall.
