Felix Reyes and Robert Moore sparked a late rally as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored three unanswered runs over the final two innings to beat the Rochester Red Wings, 5-3, on Sunday at ESL Ballpark.
Lehigh Valley took an early lead with a two-run second inning against Rochester starter Chandler Champlain. Keaton Anthony, Otto Kemp and Payton Henry strung together hits around a walk, with Anthony scoring on Steward Berroa’s RBI forceout and Kemp coming home on René Pinto’s sacrifice fly. Champlain then settled in, allowing just three hits over five innings while striking out four.
Abimelec Ortiz got Rochester on the board in the third, hitting his 16th home run off right-hander Drake Fellows. The Red Wings seized the lead in the fourth when Harry Ford, Andrew Pinckney and Joey Wiemer opened the inning with three straight singles, Ford scoring on Wiemer’s hit and Pinckney crossing on Trey Lipscomb’s sacrifice fly.
Jack Sinclair took over for Rochester in the eighth and walked Moore and Christian Cairo to start the inning. Reyes followed with a single to left, plating Moore to tie the game. Zach Penrod came on and escaped further damage.
Gus Varland entered for Rochester in the ninth and gave up singles to Henry and Berroa before pinch hitter Bryan De La Cruz worked a walk to load the bases. Moore then lined a two-run single to right to score Henry and Berroa.
Fellows earned a no-decision for Lehigh Valley after working five innings and allowing three runs on five hits, including Ortiz’s homer, with two walks and two strikeouts. Tucker Davidson (5-3) picked up the win with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, and Max Lazar struck out two in the ninth for his second save. Champlain finished with two runs allowed over five innings for Rochester, while Varland (0-1) was charged with the loss after being tagged for two runs in one-third of an inning.
Wiemer paced the Red Wings with two hits and an RBI, while Ford and Pinckney each singled and scored. Ortiz’s solo shot accounted for Rochester’s only extra-base hit.
Rochester’s record slipped to 51-34 but stayed atop the International League East, while Lehigh Valley improved to 41-46.
