Red Wings know what 1st-round pick they lose to Blues from Justin Faulk trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The simple way to sum up the Detroit Red Wings' season is this:

At the trade deadline, they traded a first-round pick to the St. Louis Blues for Justin Faulk. And now that first-rounder is in the lottery.

The Red Wings missed the playoffs.

They collapsed after the deadline in a way that seemed almost unfathomable at the time.

And it's a big gain for the Blues.

With the regular season wrapping up, that pick has slotted in to the 15th-best lottery odds for the Blues.

The Blues also have their own first-round pick that's higher up in the lottery. It's a great chance to boost their organization for the future.

That pick that slots with the 15th-best lottery odds has a 1.1% chance to be the No. 5 pick, a slightly greater than 0 chance to be No. 7, a 97.9% chance to be No. 15 and a 1.1% chance to be No. 16.

So yeah, it's probably 15, but that's still a pick the Red Wings would love to have but now don't.

The Blues are still moving around based on Thursday night's final results with their own first-rounder, but it looks like it'll slot anywhere from the 9th-11th lottery odds. Those comes with slim chances of landing one of the top-three picks.

If the lottery goes the way of St. Louis, it'll be a big deal for the Blues' future -- and it'll add insult to injury for the Red Wings.
