Now that the All-Star festivities have concluded, the Boston Red Sox and the rest of the MLB have a couple days to rest while they prepare for the second half of the season. Boston went into this break red hot, as one of the best teams in baseball.

A big contributor to this win streak are the young guys from the AAA roster stepping up for injured players; Anthony Seigler, Jake Bennett, Payton Tolle, and Tsung-Che Cheng to name a few. Even All-Star Willson Contreras is praising them, which people are insinuating is a subtle shot to the young MLB stars in Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.

Both Anthony and Mayer have had some major sophomore slumps this season. After an amazing rookie season, Anthony was supposed to step up as leader of the offense.

Instead, he was batting .229/.354/.321/.675 with just five doubles, one home run, and five RBI in 30 games before going down with a finger injury that has sidelined him since.

Mayer has been no better, slashing .220/.282/.312/.594 with 10 doubles, three home runs, and 22 RBI in 70 games. Mayer has also yet to play triple digits in a season at any point in his career, as he is now on the IL again with a bone stress reaction in his forearm.

The Red Sox are coming off a massive hot streak, going 14-2 in their last 16 games, with three of the four series being sweeps, and winning the last nine in a row.

They are now set up to make a run to the playoffs, as they went from being six games back from the Wild Card, to just 0.5 games out of the final spot. With that in mind, getting some big players at the deadline is probably right for them.

Is it really on the duo?

Honestly, probably not. It might be more so the media trying to cause drama for clicks, and not really what’s happening behind closed doors.

Something that’s equally and maybe even more likely is the Red Sox parting with Kyle Boddy and Driveline, the analytics-driven company that had taken over Boston’s hitting and pitching gameplans. They parted with them on the 18th of June; since then, the Red Sox are 17-6.

So, in reality, it’s probably just a coincidence the young guys were out when this happened. They just need to get healthy, gain more experience and maturity, and they’ll be performing for the Sox when needed.
