BOSTON — Wilyer Abreu threw his bat and screamed in Spanish “Are you crazy?” at the Red Sox dugout as he headed to first base after belting a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning Saturday.
Anthony Seigler jumped out of the dugout to scream and flex his traps.
A celebration also erupted inside the Red Sox weight room where starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval was watching with Aroldis Chapman’s son.
“I screamed — very loud,” Sandoval said. “Me and Chappy’s son were up here just going crazy. It was cool.”
Boston won 7-6 over the Rays at Fenway Park on Saturday, marking their 12th straight victory.
“Electric win,” interim manager Chad Tracy said.
The Sox are on their longest winning streak since 2006. It is just the seventh time in franchise history that Boston has had a streak of 12 or more wins.
“Never a doubt,” Tracy joked.
Sandoval, who allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings, joked, “Not even I could ruin the streak.”
Boston (49-48) trailed 6-3 entering the seventh and scored four times to take the lead. Masataka Yoshida’s pinch-hit RBI groundout cut it to 6-4. Ceddanne Rafaela’s two-out RBI double made it 6-5. Abreu then put Boston ahead with a 412-foot two-run blast to right field, his fourth homer in the past two days.
“As the moment’s building and everything’s happening, the dugout, you can kind of feel the good tension of everybody anticipating the next guy to get the job done,” said recent trade addition Jahmai Jones, who homered in the second inning.
Rafaela said it was the most fired up he has seen Abreu in person. He had previously only seen Abreu that emotional on TV, during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. In the WBC quarterfinals on March 14, Abreu held his bat for a few seconds before tossing it high in the air after his three-run home run in the sixth inning to put Venezuela ahead 7-5 over defending champion Japan.
“I saw it in the WBC and I saw that today,” Rafaela said. “And I was able to be in there and it was a fun experience.”
Jones added, “You saw the reaction of the dugout, saw the reaction that he (Abreu) had. It’s a lot of energy. It’s a lot of fun. And it’s a really big moment.”
Sandoval said, “Those boys have got a lot of energy down there. The other guys that have come up from (Triple-A Worcester) have helped spark everyone else. And getting Willson (Contreras) back (from suspension) obviously was huge, too.”
It was the Red Sox’ largest comeback win of the season. They had previously been 0-31 in games when trailing by three or more runs.
“The way we’re going, obviously they feel confident,” Tracy said. “They feel confident in themselves. They feel good about themselves. And another game that shows, at the moment, they don’t feel like they’re out of it. If you keep it close, they feel like they’re gonna make a run at it. So it was awesome to watch that.”
