The Boston Red Sox biggest question in the 2026 MLB Draft has been answered.
They drafted an immensely talented high schooler, Martin Shelar, in the ninth round. He fell that far because not every team was sure he'd sign a contract rather than go to play college baseball.
On Friday, the Red Sox signed Shelar.
MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported the deal at about 1 p.m. ET: Shelar is signing for a $1.5 million bonus, a huge number for a player taken that late.
Clearly, Boston felt it could get a deal done, and the Red Sox paid handsomely to do so.

The Shelar contract raises the upside of Boston's draft class considerably, because he brings an impressive right-handed bat.
The Mississippi State commit batted .500 as a high school senior with 19 home runs, and he's been compared to former Seattle Mariners slugged Jay Buhner.
His bat speed, at least visually, appears to be off the charts:
Shelar is an outfielder, and just coming out of high school, he'll likely need multiple years to develop in the minor leagues before he could arrive in the majors.
But the big news is that Boston has him on board. Now it's Shelar's turn to prove the Red Sox feelings on him to be correct.
