The Boston Red Sox have not lived up to expectations so far this season, but Craig Breslow may not be ready to give up on the season.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, during an appearance on the "Just Baseball Show," the Red Sox are in the market for a right-handed bat and are willing to take on a bad contract if they have to.

“What I’ve heard today is, they’re aggressively looking for a right-handed hitter… It might be a case where the Red Sox are willing to take on a bad contract," said Olney on Wednesday.

Jeremy Peña could be a great right-handed bat for the Red Sox to add. Peña has only played shortstop in the big leagues. The Red Sox would have to shuffle their infield or move him to second base to accommodate him, but his bat makes it worth it. Marcelo Mayer has not turned into a consistent bat yet, and the Red Sox are running out of time to wait on him.

Despite their rough start, they are still only four games back of a wild card spot. Adding Peña could be a move that really turns things around for the team. He is slashing .278/.324/.412 in 24 games and has three home runs. He has one more season of control before free agency, and the Houston Astros are headed toward being sellers.

Adding Peña would allow Mayer and Caleb Durbin to platoon at third base when Trevor Story is back. Peña will not be cheap, but the Red Sox may be desperate if they are truly willing to even take on a bad contract to get a good right-handed hitter. He was an All-Star last year. He was a Gold Glover and World Series MVP as a rookie, and has a career OPS+ of 106.
