The Boston Red Sox acquired Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason, and the deal included a player to be named later or cash considerations.
On Monday, the Red Sox announced they completed the trade by sending Patrick Galle to the Cardinals. Galle was drafted in the 17th round of the 2025 MLB Draft out of the University of Mississippi. He made three appearances with Single-A Salem last season, allowing three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Now that Galle has been sent to the Cardinals, the full Sonny Gray trade looks like this:
- Red Sox acquire: Sonny Gray and cash
- Cardinals acquire: Richard Fitts, Brandon Clarke and Patrick Galle
The true winner of the trade can be decided further down the line. Gray has struggled so far for the Red Sox, but he has a track record as a successful pitcher in the big leagues. Fitts, Clarke and Galle could all end up being fine players in the big leagues, but the Red Sox felt that Gray gives their team a better chance to win now.
Galle's fastball tops out at 99 mph, so the Red Sox are giving up some velocity. However, he is only in Single-A and was not a top prospect in their organization. At best, he could have ended up in the big league bullpen in some capacity in a couple of years. However, losing him seems like a small price to pay if Gray can end up being as good as the Red Sox hope he can.
