DETROIT — The Red Sox will welcome a key member of their rotation back Wednesday — and to do so, they sent down a pitcher who made his major league debut late in Tuesday’s win.

Boston activated righty Sonny Gray off the 15-day injured list and he’ll pitch Wednesday’s series finale against the Tigers. Lefty Alec Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Worcester after two days in the majors.

For Gray, the return to the rotation comes after the minimum 15 days on the IL. The 36-year-old suffered a minor hamstring strain during his Patriots Day start against the Tigers on April 20 and left in the third inning. He was placed on the IL the next day. The injury improved over the course of that week and Gray threw a three-inning simulated game at Fenway Park on Friday. He will return without having made a rehab appearance.

Gray has logged a 4.30 ERA in five starts this year. He had allowed an earned run and three hits to Detroit before leaving his last outing.

Gamboa, a 29-year-old former Dodgers farmhand who spent part of last season in Korea, joined the Red Sox on Monday when veteran lefty Danny Coulombe hit the injured list with cervical (neck) spasms. Gamboa pitched the ninth inning in Boston’s 10-3 win and threw 14 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning that includes two strikeouts (Zach McKinstry and Hao-Yu Lee).

For now, further roster moves are on hold as the Red Sox aim to keep Ranger Suarez (hamstring) and Roman Anthony (wrist) off the injured list after they left games earlier in the week.
