TORONTO — Another day, another bullpen shuffle for the Red Sox.
Boston has summoned lefty long reliever Alec Gamboa from Triple-A Worcester and designated righty Seth Martinez for assignment ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays, sources said. It’s the latest in a series of moves meant to reshuffle an overworked bullpen.
Gamboa, a 29-year-old rookie, has impressed in a handful of major league stints this year. He owns a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings while going multiple frames on three occasions. In his last big league outing on July 25, he allowed one run and struck out six Blue Jays in four innings in relief of Sonny Gray. He has a 3.68 ERA in 17 games (eight starts) for the WooSox and last pitched Friday, throwing 32 pitches in two innings.
“Actually, we sent him back with the thought of stretching him out some more, so it gives us length,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “It gives us deep length in case it’s needed, with Seth throwing yesterday. It’s important to have.”
Martinez made his Red Sox debut Tuesday in the eighth inning of a 5-3 loss and gave up a run in his first taste of major league action this season. The 31-year-old former Astro logged a 5.55 ERA in 60 innings for the WooSox this season before being called up as a long option Sunday. He was out of options, necessitating the DFA.
The Red Sox have had a revolving door at the end of their bullpen since trade deadline day. First, Rule 5 rookie Ryan Watson was designated for assignment as the club activated newcomer Erik Miller, who came over from the Giants in a trade. On Friday, after a 13-inning game in which Chad Tracy used every reliever, Boston optioned Greg Weissert to the WooSox while calling up long man Raymond Burgos. Burgos pitched three innings on back-to-back days before being sent down Saturday night; Martinez replaced him. Martinez is now the odd man out and will have to clear waivers to return to Worcester.
“Since the end of the last homestand, we did the (bullpen) day (Sunday) knowing we were gonna have to probably rotate guys in to keep us whole and have some length down there in case it’s needed,” Tracy said.
The Red Sox now have three open 40-man roster spots (and nine players on the 60-day injured list, including Roman Anthony, Garrett Crochet and Trevor Story).
