The Boston Red Sox will receive an energy boost heading into Sunday night's game against the New York Yankees.

Infielder and utility man Romy Gonzalez will make his season debut as the Red Sox look to complete the four-game sweep of their bitter rival at Fenway Park.

Gonzalez will bat fifth as the designated hitter.

Hearing about Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez being active for tonight’s game against the Yankees, “looking that way.” So the plan as of now is for Gonzalez to be back from the IL, per source

Gonzalez was shut down during Spring Training. He received a PRP injection into his shoulder and eventually underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure to clean up the shoulder joint.

This landed him on the 60-day injured list, but his recovery was not a smooth process.

Gonzalez began making rehab starts with Double-A Portland in June, but was shut down when he began to experience hip flexor tightness.

He took the weekend off before returning to play with Triple-A Worcester on June 22.

Gonzalez played just six minor league games -- and six competitive baseball games this season. He recorded two hits, one home run and two RBI.

He will make his debut in what will become his sixth Major League season.

Gonzalez had 96 hits in 96 games last year with the Red Sox. He recorded 23 doubles, nine home runs, 53 RBI, and finished the season with a .305 batting average and a .826 OPS.
