The Boston Red Sox are already struggling in a stacked division, but could the trade deadline make things even worse for the team?
The American League East has been a historically good division, with four different teams reaching the World Series since 2018. Boston is struggling right now at 29-41, but multiple AL East rivals, including the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, are having great seasons.
With the trade deadline drawing closer, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer listed the Rays as the best landing spot to trade for three-time batting champion Luis Arráez to bolster their offense.
"The Rays have been platooning Richie Palacios and Ben Williamson at second base, and all they have to show for it is 0.4 rWAR and an 84 wRC+," Rymer wrote on Wednesday. "It's a spot they need to upgrade if they want to keep pace with the New York Yankees in the AL East.
"Luis Arraez can do that, and he'd fit in the Rays' lineup like peanut butter with jelly. He's the best contact hitter in the game. Their offense runs on the lowest strikeout rate in the league. Let's make it happen."
Arráez may not boast much power, but the 29-year-old is arguably the best contact hitter in all of baseball. The three-time All-Star is having a great season offensively with the San Francisco Giants, slashing .319/.352/.435 with two home runs and 26 runs batted in across 69 games.
The Rays currently hold the top wild-card playoff spot, but are only a few games behind the Yankees for the division lead. Bringing in a star like Arráez would instantly improve Tampa's offense down the stretch as the team eyes its first playoff appearance since 2023.
