The Boston Red Sox are 27-35 in the regular season, and while it's a poor record, they're still in the hunt for the postseason.

But, if things go south from now until the August 3 trade deadline, Craig Breslow and the Red Sox might not have any other choice but to sell some of their assets this summer. If they do, the bullpen is one area to watch.

Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic is reporting that the Red Sox have already fielded trade calls on three relievers, one of which being superstar closer Aroldis Chapman.

"The Red Sox are shopping Wong in particular, according to a league source, and have also fielded calls on relievers Aroldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and Garrett Whitlock," McCaffrey writes.

Boston keeping the phone lines open for trade calls to come in on these three relievers is noteworthy. While McCaffrey does not think the Red Sox are interested in a deal right now, this willingness to listen to offers does open the door to a deal later.

The only way the Red Sox would trade Chapman, Slaten, or Whitlock would be if this team struggles from now until the deadline, and selling becomes the best course of action for a club set to miss the postseason.

If they do sell, it's clear that Chapman, who has a 0.46 ERA this season with 13 saves and 26 strikeouts in 19.2 innings of work, and is also likely to be under club control in 2027, would draw the best return.

Whitlock has a 3.20 ERA this season and would bring back a solid return. Slaten, who has a 3.27 ERA this season, would also be a solid trade asset for the Red Sox this summer.

The Red Sox don't plan to sell, but they are doing their due diligence and have been listening to trade calls on these players as possible trade chips ahead of the deadline.
