BOSTON — The Red Sox optioned rookie starting pitcher Jake Bennett to Triple-A Worcester after his start against the Rays on Thursday, according to industry sources.
Boston will recall right-handed pitcher Jack Anderson before Friday’s game, according to another source. Anderson allowed three runs in eight innings (3.38 ERA) in his first big league stint April 14-22.
Bennett took the loss in Boston’s 8-4 defeat to the Rays at Fenway Park.
He pitched 5 ⅓ innings, allowing four runs, six hits and two walks while striking out one in his second major league start. He threw 52 of his 86 pitches for strikes (60.5%). He induced five swings and misses: three with his changeup and two with his four-seam fastball, which averaged 92.1 mph.
“Guys on base, I feel like I was just kind of rushing the delivery a little bit,” Bennett said. “Once I stayed over the rubber a little bit longer, I was able to kind of work ahead of some guys.”

It is unclear if other roster moves will also come Friday. Activating Justin Slaten (right oblique strain) from the 15-day IL is a possibility. The 28-year-old threw a scoreless inning in his second rehab outing Wednesday for Worcester. That came after he did not allow a run in his first rehab outing for Double-A Portland on Sunday.
The Red Sox could use the reinforcement, with Greg Weissert continuing to struggle in high-leverage spots.
On Thursday, Weissert replaced Bennett with one out in the sixth inning and inherited a runner at first base. He allowed a bloop single to right field — 59.7 mph off the bat — to Jonny DeLuca and walked Ben Williamson to load the bases.
He then gave up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Chandler Simpson, who hit a ground ball through the drawn-in infield into center field.
Weissert has a 5.52 ERA and .311 opponent batting average in 17 outings (14 ⅔ innings).
“It’s no secret: I’m pitching like (expletive),” Weissert said. “Bennett kept us in the game after the three spot, and once again, I come in and just blow it. So yeah, it sucks.”
