Red Sox Option Fan-Favorite Catcher Mickey Gasper To Triple-A originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox were forced to send down fan-favorite catcher Mickey Gasper in a flurry of roster moves before the series finale against the New York Yankees on Sunday night.
Gasper was optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room for utility man Romy Gonzalez. who was moved to the active roster and will be making his season debut.
Gasper remains on the 40-man roster, which meant that one more move had to be made, and ultimately that move was placing star outfielder Roman Anthony on the 60-day injured list.
Red Sox roster moves:
* Romy Gonzalez active, for the first time all season
* Mickey Gasper demoted to Triple-A Worcester
* Roman Anthony to the 60-day IL, which changes nothing for him and opens up a 40-man roster spot for Gonzalez

The decision to option Gasper most likely came down to the position he plays. The Red Sox are almost cosmically cursed to continue suffering injuries to middle infielders.
Marcelo Mayer, Trevor Story, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Nick Sogard are all currently on the injured list.
This leaves very little room for a third catcher on the roster behind Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong.
Gasper had a lengthy stay with Boston. He appeared in 34 games, registering 26 hits and batting .243 on the season.
