The Boston Red Sox are having a nightmare season, with the Alex Cora firing, the injured stars, and the regression from many of the team's hitters. It's been brutal in 2026.

Amid such a bad season, it would not be a surprise at all if, come the MLB Trade Deadline, the Red Sox wound up selling a few of their players.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller identified the Red Sox's most likely trade candidate this season as Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a versatile fielder who signed for $6 million this offseason.

"If and when they call Kristian Campbell back up at some point, the Red Sox would have even less use for IFK," Miller writes. "They presumably won't be able to get much for him other than a bit of salary relief, but that's not nothing."

Boston trading away Kiner-Falefa this year would be a signal that this $6 million offseason signing was a complete waste, as even in the moment, it didn't seem like a good decision to spend $6 million on someone who wasn't going to be heavily involved.

Red Sox's most likely trade candidate is player who made little sense to sign

The Red Sox signed Kiner-Falefa to a $6 million deal, and it was instantly a questionable move considering the major need at third base and how they already had infield depth.

Kiner-Falefa is 31 years old, and in an ideal world for the Red Sox, he wouldn't be involved in their plans this season. Ideally, Kristian Campbell gets the call-up to the Majors and thrives.

But, even if Kiner-Falefa did play often, as he's shown this season so far in 39 at-bats, he's not been a good player. He has a .205 batting average with a .449 OPS.

In the moment right after this signing was made, it was a very strange one. And now, with Miller noting that IFK is the most likely trade candidate, it only makes Craig Breslow's offseason decision look even worse.
