The Boston Red Sox did not look like they would be in this position after the opening month of the season. They fired manager Alex Cora back in late April with Chad Tracy taking over on an interim basis.
Since then, Boston has thrived. Entering Friday’s series opener against the Athletics, they are 12 games over .500 at 63-51 and just five games out of first place in the American League East.
The Red Sox have done it with a complete team effort, and what is scary is that they have help on the way. Boston had an eventful trade deadline, making a huge move by acquiring switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
Rutschman is currently on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist injury but has continued to participate in baseball activities. According to Tracy, he may begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend. That was not the only positive injury update Tracy revealed on Friday.
He also shared that outfielder Roman Anthony has progressed to hitting off a machine. The next step for Anthony is hitting off a Trajekt machine and then live pitching, but there is a real chance he returns in time for the MLB playoffs.
Anthony has been dealing with a right finger injury since early May and the Red Sox have been making do without him. Adding potentially both Anthony and Rutschman to a lineup that is already performing at a high level could make Boston one of the most dangerous teams in October.
Anthony had a tremendous rookie season in 2025 that earned him a long-term extension, and Rutschman, despite missing time with three separate injured list stints this year, has still been one of the best catchers in the league when healthy. If both players can get right in time for the postseason, the Red Sox could be a threat to make a deep run.
