ANAHEIM, Calif. — As the Red Sox begin their final road trip before the All-Star break, they’ll have the services of Willson Contreras for what seems like the next few days.
Contreras was suspended for seven games by MLB Thursday for his part in a bench-clearing brawl Tuesday against the Washington Nationals. But Contreras, along with Nate Eaton (three games) has decided to appeal their disciplinary measures and, as such, are eligible to continue playing.
Eaton is also in the starting lineup, playing right field as Wilyer Abreu serves as DH.
It’s expected those appeals will be held at some point early next week.
The current road trip will take the Red Sox from here to Chicago to face the White Sox, followed by a three-game set in New York, prior to the break.
This is the first of six games between the two teams this season. The Angels will come to Fenway in September.
Boston is 4-3-0 in its last seven series at Anaheim Stadium. Last June, in the intermediate aftermath of the Rafael Devers trade, the Sox were swept here by the Angels.
The Red Sox enter this series with a 20-21 road record this season, the sixth-best road record in the American League.
The Sox are averaging almost a run more per game on the road (4.41) than they are at home (3.55).
