Alex Cora is a loyal guy, to his team, his players and his coaching staff. In the end, however, that loyalty may have cost him his job.

According to Alex Speier's report for The Boston Globe on Thursday (subscription required), Craig Breslow discussed shaking up the Red Sox's coaching staff with Cora last year and over the offseason.

Per Speier, Cora was extremely resistant to the idea. The veteran skipper apparently did not want to work with other coaches and told Breslow he'd have to fire him if he made significant changes to Boston's coaching staff.

Sure enough, that's what happened on Saturday. In need of major changes after starting the 2026 season 10-17, Breslow fired Cora along with several of his assistants.

In Breslow's defense, he inherited Cora and much of the coaching staff, so it makes sense that he would want to install his own manager and coaches. It also sounds like his hands were somewhat tied by Cora tethering himself to his assistants.

Unfortunately for Cora, several of his coaches were underperforming, especially in terms of offensive approach, defense and baserunning. Rather than try to save his own job and work with a new coaching staff, he remained loyal to his guys until the end, even dining with them in Boston after their dismissal.
