The Boston Red Sox made a notable roster move involving their bullpen on Tuesday.
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, right-hander Tommy Kahnle was designated for assignment.
Cotillo also reported that left-hander Alec Gamboa was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take Kahnle's spot on the roster.
In eight games with the Red Sox, the 36-year-old Kahnle allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits in nine innings.
"The Sox also simply need fresh arms for an overworked bullpen. Kahnle wouldn’t have been available for tomorrow’s matinee finale," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.
"[Greg] Weissert tossed 28 pitches and is probably also out of action. [Danny] Coulombe just pitched for a second straight night," Franco added. "Weissert has a minor league option remaining; Coulombe does not."
Kahnle almost exclusively throws a changeup at this stage of his career. During the 2024 postseason with the New York Yankees, he threw 61 consecutive changeups.
He spent parts of six seasons with the Yankees and became one of manager Aaron Boone's most trusted relievers during his time in the Bronx.

In 2025 with the Detroit Tigers, Kahnle posted a 4.43 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 63 innings.
If Kahnle clears waivers, he will become a free agent.
