The Boston Red Sox have been struggling at the big league level, but two of their minor leaguers recently took a Cy Young Award winner deep.
New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is currently on a rehab assignment as he looks to return from Tommy John surgery. Cole has made three rehab starts, including one against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 29. Cole gave up three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. All three runs came by way of home runs.
The first home run came off the bat of the Red Sox's No. 27 prospect, Johanfran Garcia. Garcia hit a two-run home run off the Cy Young Award winner in the top of the fourth inning. It was Garcia's first Double-A home run.
The second home run Cole allowed came in the top of the fifth inning when Max Ferguson took him deep. Ferguson has reached as high as Triple-A, but has not made his big league debut. He is hitting .327 with four home runs in Double-A this year.
It is clear that Cole is not 100% yet and is still working his way back. However, hitting a home run off him as a minor leaguer is no small feat. He is still one of the best arms in baseball. Garcia has not been hitting great in Double-A, but perhaps his home run off Cole will get him going. He is one of the best prospects in the organization and is only 21 years old.
