Red Sox’s update on Jason Varitek suggest ex-fan favorite has no future in Boston originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

When the Boston Red Sox decided to move on from Alex Cora, it definitely came with some shock around the league. Players on the Red Sox obviously weren't happy, the media didn't expect it, and fans couldn't imagine moving on from him just yet.

As things stand, it seems to have been the wrong decision, as the Red Sox haven't been much better without Cora, dropping their last two before Monday and now sitting at 14-21 on the season.

Some of the other decisions the Red Sox made were a bit questionable, including moving on from franchise legend Jason Varitek. Varitek, who was on Cora's staff, reportedly took the news a bit tougher than others who were on the coaching staff. It makes sense that Varitek felt a certain way considering all of the history he has with Boston.

To make matters worse, it doesn't sound like he has much of a future with the organization.

“That’s a really interesting question. One person close to the Red Sox situation texted in the aftermath of the firing to say that he thought outfield instructor and third-base coach Kyle Hudson might be the interim manager, then he saw that Hudson was one of the guys fired. Also fired/reassigned/clearly not in the mix: Jason Varitek, the iconic Red Sox catcher who many expected to manage the team at some point,” Chad Jennings of The Athletic wrote.

Varitek was probably hopeful that he'd get the head coaching job at some point, whether that be in the next year or much longer. Obviously, there's no guarantee that he won't get the job, but the early signs aren't too promising just yet.
